As 2020 comes to an end (for which many people are thankful), it’s time to look towards 2021 and the changes that come with a new year. During this holiday season, it’s a good idea for everyone to take some time to think about their new year’s resolutions. New year’s resolutions aren’t just for the young—it’s never too late to make lifestyle changes that benefit you! If you’re stumped for ideas and need a little inspiration, we’ve got you covered here at TruCare Home Care. Here are 10 exciting new year’s resolution ideas for seniors!

Great New Year’s Resolutions for Seniors

1. Change Your Diet

If you think you’re too old for a change in diet to make a difference to your health, you’d be wrong! Eating a healthy diet can have a drastic effect on your health in a matter of weeks or months. Try eating more fruits and vegetables with lots of leafy greens, nuts, and beans.

2. Be More Active

Exercise is crucial for a healthy life, and it’s never too late! If you aren’t able to do rigorous exercise, try some light activities such as aqua aerobics, yoga, or light walking.

3. Quit Smoking

It’s no secret that smoking damages the body, so it’s never too late to stop. This is one of the top new year’s resolutions in the US but very few people actually stick to it! Why not prove these statistics wrong for 2021?

4. Make Your Home “Anti-Fall”

Many elderly people live in the same conditions as they did when they were in their 20s, which means precautions to stop falls aren’t usually taken into account. With one in three elderly adults having a fall every year, you should certainly make your home fall-proof before it happens to you!

5. Go Mental With the Workouts

We don’t mean at the gym; we mean with your brain! There’s lots of evidence to suggest that regularly working your brain delays the onset of dementia. Puzzles like crosswords, Sudoku, and many other activities such as socializing and reading are great for the brain.

6. Talk To Someone When You Feel Anxious

Old-age anxiety is a hugely understated problem in the US. The main reason is that elderly people do not know where to turn or feel they could be a bother. This can create a spiral of anxiety and depression that’s much harder to get out of further down the line. If you feel like this, make it your new year’s resolution to talk to someone and get help. It’ll change your life!

7. Sleep More

Adults need more sleep than many people realize. Recent studies show that people who get under 8 hours of sleep consistently underperform compared to those that get eight or more hours. Try getting into a new sleeping pattern if you’re one that likes to burn the midnight oil.

8. Cut Down on the Alcohol

If you have an alcoholic drink every day, you may want to consider cutting down. Evidence shows that adults that drink into old age are much more likely to suffer from dementia, liver disease, stomach cancer, and kidney problems. Set aside one or two days a week when you can relax with a drink and find other ways to relax on the other 5 or 6 days!

9. Take More Trips To the Doctor’s Office

Regular health checks are vital for seniors. It enables doctors to catch any health issues early, greatly increasing the chances of successful treatment. If you hardly ever visit your doctor, make sure you do so more often this year! It’s a good habit to get into and could save your life.

10. Take Those Multivitamins

If you don’t do so already, you should start taking multivitamins. As we age, our bodies struggle to extract the necessary vitamins from our food. Multivitamins top up our vitamin intake from natural sources so you won’t suffer from any vitamin deficiencies that could turn into long-term health problems.
